FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

#fancy-title-594f472bbc263 a{ color: #333333; }
Is UTM only sold to the US Military?
NO. UTM products are used by local, state and federal law enforcement agencies throughout the USA and by law enforcement agencies, militaries and professional training organizations in over 55 countries – growing exponentially every year!
How much energy is in the UTM marking rounds?
UTM has the lowest energy of any NLTA. The 9mm MMR has an average of 1.9 Joules or 1.4 ft./lbs. and the 5.56mm MMR has an average of 2.9 Joules or 2.1 ft./lbs. – each projectile only weighing slightly more than a standard paper clip!
What other types of products and services does UTM offer to the Trainer?
UTM is a holistic system for the trainer. We have training munitions, conversions, NLTA personal protective equipment, NLTA props, combatives equipment, portable training facility (PTF) and training accessories – all of which should be used together as a training system for maximum effectiveness. Please see the ‘Products’ and ‘Training’ sections of the Website for a full listing.
Is UTM on the GSA Schedule?
Yes the UTM GSA Contract Number is: GS-07F-5749P. Please also see our GSA link in the ‘Work’ section of our Website.
Does the use of UTM Ammunition require “special magazines”?
No, However UTM does offer the UTM Blue Magazine for the 5.56mm. This was developed for the US Military to replace the old and damaged metal magazines that were being used for training. The UTM Blue Magazine has additional built-in technology, which bypasses the weapon’s feed ramp creating a magazine with unparalleled reliability…and it’s “blue” for more recognition during training. Please see our “Products” section of our website under ‘weapon accessories’.

UTM ammunition can be used with virtually any magazine, such as Magpul’s PMAG’s, other polymer, metal or standard issue magazines, etc., however, we strongly recommend using the UTM Blue Magazine for optimum Safety, Reliability and Performance.

What lubricant/cleaner does UTM recommend be used on UTM conversion kits and firearms.
UTM does not require or endorse one lubricant over another. You can use any brand of lubricant/cleaner of which may be recommended by the manufacturer of your firearm.
What is the accuracy of the UTM Man-Marker Rounds (MMR)?
• UTM 5.56mm MMR is 50mm (2ins) at 20 meters.
• UTM 9mm MMR is 50mm (2 inches) at 10 meters.
Will UTM Ammunition cycle in fully automatic weapons?

Yes, UTM is the only NLTA that cycles in automatic weapons (both loose and linked) and is more reliable than with live rounds. It was tested and certified by the US Military at 99.8% reliable.

What if any modifications need to be made to the firearm to allow for the use of a UTM conversion?
All UTM conversions are easily installed and removed by the user with no permanent modifications to the firearm.
How easy is facility clean up after using UTM Man-Marker Rounds (MMR)?
The UTM marking compound can be easily removed from hard or painted surfaces by wiping with a soft wet cloth. Projectiles can be simply swept up and disposed of in regular household garbage. Wash clothing in with normal household detergent to remove marks. UTM rounds are U.S. EPA certified Landfill safe, low emission and available in non-toxic options.
What is the standoff distance when using UTM’s blanks?

There is no standoff distance when using our Silent Blank Round (SBR) as there are zero emissions. We recommend only a standoff distance of 18 inches with our Battlefield Blank Round (BBR) as there is no heat emitted.

Does UTM make conversions for all weapons and all calibers?
No, but UTM has conversions for the majority of commonly used law enforcement and military weapon systems utilized worldwide. UTM is committed to meeting our customers’ needs and we continually add new conversions to our product lines. For more information see ‘Conversions’ in the ‘Products’ section of our Website.
Where can I purchase UTM products?
You can purchase directly from UTM or you can contact your local dealer or distributor
Does UTM have the highest velocity of all training munitions?
NO. UTM has the lowest velocity of all Non-Lethal Training Ammunition (NLTA). The 5.56mm MMR is only 375 feet per second and the 9mm MMR is only 335 feet per second. To put it in context, it has less velocity than an air compressed gaming weapon.
How reliable are UTM munitions?
Extremely reliable. UTM has the highest rated reliability of all NLTA. The US Military has rated the 5.56mm MMR both loose and linked as 99.8% reliable!
Does UTM require training for the sale and use of their munitions?
No. We offer a UTM certification course that we strongly recommend to all users. This course is listed in more detail in the ‘Training’ section of our website under ‘Training Courses’. Please contact our Sales Team to book one of our training courses.
Is the certification training for the use of your munitions the only training that UTM offers?

NO. The bore and chamber must be left clean and dry. Light lubrication should be used on the bearing surfaces of the conversions.
What special tools, if any, are required to convert my firearm for the use of UTM ammunition?
The majority of our conversions are a simple bolt, barrel or slide one-for-one change. Only a small number of UTM conversions require a special tool for the conversion process, in most cases these conversion tools are supplied as part of the conversion kit.
What is the optimum effective range for training with UTM Man-Marker Rounds?
• UTM 5.56mm and 7.62mm MMR are approximately 30 meters or closer with maximum engagement range of 50 meters.
• UTM 9mm MMR is approximately 20 meters or closer.
What is the standoff distance when using UTM’s Man Marker Rounds?
We recommend Personal Protective Equipment is worn at all times and no point blank shots at any time. The US Military CCMCK program has a 1.5-meter standoff with the 5.56mm MMR.
Do I need a Blank Firing Attachment (BFA) when using UTM Silent or Battlefield Blanks?

No. A BFA is not required when using UTM Blank Ammunition. UTM Blank Ammunition will cycle the weapon at its normal rate of fire (cyclic rate).
