Rifles & Machine guns – 5.56mm and 7.62 caliber – Fail-Safe

UTM 5.56mm Man-Marker and Target Bullet Round Conversions are uniquely designed to prevent the discharge of traditional 5.56mm/.223 “live” ammunition (5.56 NATO, 5.56 x 45mm, and .223 Remington). Fail-Safe is achieved by utilizing an offset firing pin design, which will only work with the rim fire primer used in the UTM Cartridge, but not with a “live” center fire cartridge. In the event a 5.56mm “live” cartridge is chambered and the trigger is pulled, the Conversions offset firing pin will strike outside the primer pocket of the 5.56mm “live” round. This makes it impossible to detonate the “live” cartridge in the UTM converted weapon.

Safety

“Live” 5.56mm ammunition uilizes a center fire primer design. With a center fire primer the weapons firing pin must strike within 8mm of the center of the primer to detonate the cartridge.

Safety

All UTM 5.56mm rifle conversions employ a Fail-Safe measure where the firing pin is offset from center. Not only is the firing pin strike outside the strike area of a “Live” cartridge center fire primer, it does not strike the primer at all, hence the weapon fails to fire the host weapons “Live” caliber ammunition.

This applies to all UTM rifle conversions.

As an additional safety feature, TBR ammunition has a recessed primer to prevent firing pin contact from a “Live” or MMR bolt carrier assembly.

HANDGUNS

All UTM Pistol conversion kits bear a unique chamber profile that will not allow “Live/Lethal” Ammunition to completely chamber therefore holding the weapon out of battery, making the weapon inoperative. The conversions are also slotted on the side, which allows the brass case of a live round to rupture in a controlled manner dispersing gases and unburnt powder through the ejection port if all safety protocols are not followed or a round is distorted/forced into the conversion.

The UTM conversions provide safety well beyond that of any other conversion on the market, providing live round lock-out for commonly used ammunition in the Law Enforcement and Military communities with the remaining portion of uncommon rounds being dispelled with our gas dispersal safety feature – greatly reducing incident potential.

Consistent Velocities & Finite Energy

Unlike conventional training ammunition the UTM patented system does not utilize any propellant other than the primer and power load. UTM cartridges use only the energy provided by the front primer to propel the projectile for a safe, low-controlled velocity, providing consistent safe impact energies. The isolated and contained rear power load expands the UTM cartridge, which functions the UTM blowback system. This realistically and reliably cycles the converted weapon, ensuring that weapon to weapon differences have no effect on velocities. The energy sources used and needed for weapon function and projectile propellant are completely separate in the UTM system.

  • Consistent safe shot to shot muzzle velocities are essential for safe, Force-on-Force or Force-on-Target Training.
  • The UTM Man-Marker Rounds (MMR) 5.56mm have an average muzzle energy of 2.1g/lbs or 2.9 Joules and the 9mm has an average muzzle energy of 1.4g/lbs or 1.9 Joules.
  • UTM’s “Live” lethal Target Bullet Rounds (TBR) have an average muzzle energy of 10g/lbs.

UTM Blank Cartridge Advantage

The UTM Battlefield Blanks (BBR) use a primer and power load only, and require no Blank Firing Attachment (BFA). Unlike a BFA, the rifle conversions prevent the firing of live rounds.

In our patented primer and power load system, the front primer is used to generate noise up to 155db., while the rear power load is used to cycle the weapon. Because the primer and power load are separated, we are able to produce the Silent Blank Round (SBR), which uses only the rear power load and makes no noise other than the cycling of the weapon.

  • Silent Blanks (SBR) have a 0” (0mm) standoff distance from the muzzle.
  • Silent Blanks (SBR) have no emissions which allows for safe contact shots in CQB or Ground Defense training
  • Battlefield Blanks (BBR) have an 18” (0.5m) standoff distance from the muzzle.
  • UTM Blank Rounds have NO heat emissions and can be safely used in fire restricted ranges, environments or areas.
  • Burns caused from barrel exchanges in machine guns are eradicated – UTM Blank Rounds emit NO heat.
  • Approved eye protection is recommended with all UTM ammunition

Eco Safe

UTM’s Primer and Power load Cartridge System is the first to isolate the large amount of operational energy needed to cycle the weapon from the small amount of energy required for propelling the projectile or producing noise. The UTM Cartridge System only expels a small amount of energy, which in turn produces a minimal amount of emissions.

UTM MMR and TBR Ammunition Advantages:

  • All UTM Man-Marker Rounds (MMR) and UTM Target Bullet Rounds (TBR) use only a single primer for projectile propulsion. While some gas has to be released for propulsion there is virtually no barrel emissions. (Adequate ventilation required)
  • Using the UTM MMR and TBR Systems allows for, pistols, submachine guns, assault rifles or machine guns to be used safely within indoor environments and at close range.
  • UTM ammunition releases minimal quantities of gas and can normally be used inside buildings without the need for extensive air handling equipment.
  • No lead exposure from projectiles – UTMs projectiles are aluminum – NO LEAD.
  • UTM projectiles are powered by a primer only.
  • UTM training ammunition uses aluminum or aluminum and plastic projectiles eliminating lead exposure contracted from the use of lead projectiles.

UTM Blank Ammunition Advantages:

Emission free UTM blanks are simulator compatible. The UTM Blank System allows for the use of most types of barrel mounted lasers.

  • UTM Silent Blanks (SBR) have no front primer and are emission free.
  • UTM SBR omit zero emissions, while maintaining weapon function.
  • UTM SBR allows for the use of simulators that require the weapons barrels to be blocked by a laser.
  • UTM Battlefield Blanks (BBR) use only the front primer for the production of noise with minimal emissions from the weapons barrel.

UTM BBR (LBR) can be used with all versions of MILES gear or SAAB.

Cleanup & Disposal

UTM spent ammunition allows for easy clean up and is environmentally safe, Non-Hazardous waste.

  • UTM’s Man-Marker (MMR) projectiles use a Non-Toxic marking compound.
  • UTM MMR marking compound can be simply cleaned from hard surfaces by wiping with a soft cloth. Some surfaces may require the use of commercially available household cleaners to aid in removal.
  • All UTM ammunition products allow for easy facility clean up, simply sweep up spent UTM cartridges and projectiles and dispose of them in common waste (USA) or in accordance with local or agency SOP’s, laws or regulations on disposal.
  • Spent UTM cartridges and projectiles fit the category of solid dry waste, local landfill disposable.

Extensive testing (TCLP Test) has shown that the heavy metal levels found in spent UTM ammunition are far below that of the North American Regulatory Characteristics for metals according to U.S. Federal EPA and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) criteria, therefore the spent cases fit the solid waste category of dry industrial waste and as such, can be disposed of at a Non-Hazardous Subtitle D Facility (e.g. any local landfill site).

With UTMʼs continuous commitment to safety, there is always an ongoing effort to find additional ways to create the safest training environment possible.

Working in combination with our suppliers, and at the request of several of our customers, UTM has developed the Blue Safety Magazines, which will add an additional level of safety to your present and future UTM Training Programs by providing clear training indicators to instructors, users and bystanderʼs that weapons are in “training mode” for Non-Lethal Training Ammunition (NLTA) exercises.

30 round M16/M4, H&K 416, SCAR Light and 200 round M249 SAW Magazines are available in “SAFETY BLUE”.
