UTM 5.56mm Man-Marker and Target Bullet Round Conversions are uniquely designed to prevent the discharge of traditional 5.56mm/.223 “live” ammunition (5.56 NATO, 5.56 x 45mm, and .223 Remington). Fail-Safe is achieved by utilizing an offset firing pin design, which will only work with the rim fire primer used in the UTM Cartridge, but not with a “live” center fire cartridge. In the event a 5.56mm “live” cartridge is chambered and the trigger is pulled, the Conversions offset firing pin will strike outside the primer pocket of the 5.56mm “live” round. This makes it impossible to detonate the “live” cartridge in the UTM converted weapon.

“Live” 5.56mm ammunition uilizes a center fire primer design. With a center fire primer the weapons firing pin must strike within 8mm of the center of the primer to detonate the cartridge.

All UTM 5.56mm rifle conversions employ a Fail-Safe measure where the firing pin is offset from center. Not only is the firing pin strike outside the strike area of a “Live” cartridge center fire primer, it does not strike the primer at all, hence the weapon fails to fire the host weapons “Live” caliber ammunition.
This applies to all UTM rifle conversions.

As an additional safety feature, TBR ammunition has a recessed primer to prevent firing pin contact from a “Live” or MMR bolt carrier assembly.
All UTM Pistol conversion kits bear a unique chamber profile that will not allow “Live/Lethal” Ammunition to completely chamber therefore holding the weapon out of battery, making the weapon inoperative. The conversions are also slotted on the side, which allows the brass case of a live round to rupture in a controlled manner dispersing gases and unburnt powder through the ejection port if all safety protocols are not followed or a round is distorted/forced into the conversion.
The UTM conversions provide safety well beyond that of any other conversion on the market, providing live round lock-out for commonly used ammunition in the Law Enforcement and Military communities with the remaining portion of uncommon rounds being dispelled with our gas dispersal safety feature – greatly reducing incident potential.

UTM’s Primer and Power load Cartridge System is the first to isolate the large amount of operational energy needed to cycle the weapon from the small amount of energy required for propelling the projectile or producing noise. The UTM Cartridge System only expels a small amount of energy, which in turn produces a minimal amount of emissions.

Emission free UTM blanks are simulator compatible. The UTM Blank System allows for the use of most types of barrel mounted lasers.

UTM spent ammunition allows for easy clean up and is environmentally safe, Non-Hazardous waste.
Extensive testing (TCLP Test) has shown that the heavy metal levels found in spent UTM ammunition are far below that of the North American Regulatory Characteristics for metals according to U.S. Federal EPA and New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) criteria, therefore the spent cases fit the solid waste category of dry industrial waste and as such, can be disposed of at a Non-Hazardous Subtitle D Facility (e.g. any local landfill site).
