Edged Weapons – Instructor

This 3-day course is designed to provide the trainer with the skills and concepts necessary to prepare for the realities of an edged weapons attack. The knife culture continues to grow and the ubiquitous nature of edged weapons in our society makes the likelihood of encountering a folding, fixed or improvised edged weapon during a critical incident, a very real possibility.

Most edged weapons programs are very rehearsed and ridged, directing role players to attack in a predetermined, singular and controlled manner while the officer “performs” the technique. Although, this approach may work in the mat room, it does not simulate the violent and unpredictable nature of a live knife attack in the street! It also does not allow the trainer to train in an environment where they can work through their own physiological response to the stress of this type of situation.

Our approach to edged weapons defense consists of preparing for multiple attacks, from any angle and aggressively defending against the assault. It is built around stress inoculation and skill builders rather than rehearsed techniques and takes the user through a progression of drills to develop these skills based on their bodies natural movements. We also feel that it is imperative to understand that the knife attack begins before the blade is brandished so there is heavy emphasis on awareness, recognition of pre-assault queues as well as preemptive action when warranted.

A real knife fight is not pretty or glamorous so training should be built around the real nature of this kind of attack in a “leave your ego at the door” environment that promotes success and confidence rather than training scars.

The course will also cover the following; instructor methodology, critical philosophies in edged weapons defense; how to teach concepts and principles not just techniques; inherent problems such as, physical limitations of students; how to set up in-service training with limitations such as, time, money, facilities and other common problems.

When available and facilities allow we will include the use of Non-Lethal Training Ammunitions (NLTA)/CCMCK and drills related to Use of Force transitions and Edged Weapons Defense. Also include in this portion of the course will be the “how to” in utilizing the NLTA/CCMCK and skill building exercises to improve your training.
