Ground Defense

The goal of this course is to provide the user with the skills and concepts necessary to prevent them from being taken to the ground during a violent assault as well as how to handle
encounters that do go to the ground.

The explosion in popularity of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has brought awareness to many regarding the need for anyone who goes in harms way to be able to fight both on the ground as well as on your feet. This course is designed specifically, however for the realities of a street encounter for officers, not sport grappling. One of our sayings is “In the ring, there are no gunbelts and in the street there are no referees.” You could add that in the ring there is no concrete, glass, hidden weapons or multiple attackers either! If you have grappling experience, we do not suggest “leaving your skills at the door” but rather attempt to bridge the gap between what works in the Gym with what works on the street through a progression of drills and skill builders performed in a realistic training environment that simulates an encounter on the street and allows you to utilize your skills and improve your survivability.

Every fight that ends up on the ground probably started on the feet so we put heavy emphasis on awareness, pre-assault queues, the inherent dangers of going to the ground, not being predisposed to going the ground and skills necessary for an officer to stay on his feet (takedown defense). In this course we also cover close quarters striking, standing grappling, various ground positions, weapon retention during a ground assault as well as hidden weapon considerations during the encounter.

A ground assault on the street can be an explosive, violent and extremely dangerous event for an officer so we have designed our program around the realities of the street and not the ring. We try to build training success, not training scars. When available and facilities allow we will include the use of Non-Lethal Training Ammunitions (NLTA)/CCMCK and drills related to Use of Force transitions and ground defense.
