NATIONAL SCHOOL SHIELD PROGRAM – 2013

UTM, team members in the national school shield initiative providing best practice manual for active threat response. We developed a national best practices/training program and certification for armed security personnel within our schools to include; School Resource Officer, School Staff and/or volunteer personnel.

What more can we do as a nation to improve the safety of our children at school? This was the question raised by the National Rifle Association (NRA) after the Sandy Hook tragedy in which twenty young lives were taken along with the lives of six devoted school staff.

The posing of this question led to the assembly of a team of recognized experts in homeland security, law-enforcement training and school safety to conduct a survey of selected schools and their current security standards. This review has been conducted without any preconceived conclusions or mandate from the NRA except to determine what is needed to save young lives. The NRA has fully honored its commitment to respect the independence of this task force and to fund its work.

There are many experts in school safety. Some are self-proclaimed experts and others are nationally recognized leaders and innovators. The group of experts assembled for the National School Shield (NSS) Task Force is a selection of the most experienced and respected security experts; however, it is recognized that there are many others who have written, worked and contributed in the arena of school safety. While our report studied and reviewed the work of many in the field, our purpose was to bring together experts with different security backgrounds to provide a fresh perspective to the challenge of school violence. It is our hope that as the NSS continues into the future, the contribution and support for this initiative by school safety experts will expand.

Banshee is an American action-drama television series created by Jonathan Tropper and David Schickler originally appearing on the Cinemax network beginning on January 11, 2013. Set in the eponymous small town of Banshee in Pennsylvania Amish country, the series’ main character is an enigmatic ex-con (Antony Starr), who assumes the identity of Lucas Hood, the town’s murdered sheriff, to hide from powerful crime lord Rabbit (Ben Cross). Imposing his own brand of justice, Banshee follows Hood as he attempts to reconcile with his former lover, Rabbit’s daughter, Anastasia (Ivana Miličević), who has herself adopted an assumed identity, married, and raised a family during Hood’s incarceration. Hood struggles to maintain his new identity while still embracing crime alongside his partners Job (Hoon Lee) and Sugar (Frankie Faison), and coming into conflict with local kingpin Kai Proctor (Ulrich Thomsen).

The series was developed as part of Cinemax’s drive to develop original content. A 10-episode second season debuted in January 2014. Banshee was renewed for a third season that same month.

Lone Survivor is a 2013 American war film written and directed by Peter Berg, and starring Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch, Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Eric Bana. The film is based on the 2007 nonfiction book of the same name by Marcus Luttrell and Patrick Robinson. Set during the war in Afghanistan, Lone Survivor dramatizes the failed United States Navy SEALs counter-insurgent mission Operation Red Wings, during which a four-man SEAL reconnaissance and surveillance team was tasked to track Taliban leader Ahmad Shah.

Although Wahlberg, Kitsch, Hirsch and Foster had physically trained for their roles prior to filming, Luttrell organized a three-week training regimen at a bootcamp in New Mexico, where the actors were trained by elite military personnel in weapons, as well as military communications and tactics. Military advisor Mark Semos trained the four actors in live-firing exercises so that they could feel the physical impact of firing military rifles. They also practiced “shoot, move, cover” drills that would improve their muscle memory and enable them to react convincingly as Navy SEALs during filming.

The two weakest contestants go against each other in another elimination contest, the one who wins goes on with the first two. In the second contest, the three contestants’ strength is tested, and the weakest contestant is eliminated. In the third contest, the two contestants have a test of their ability to solve a puzzle or other intellectual challenge. The winner is given the title of “One Man Army” and $10,000.
