Use of Force – Instructor

This program will provide the trainer with the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to instruct all aspects related to the Use of Force and also properly evaluate Agency or Unit Use of Force incidents. The overall objective is to assist the trainer with a more definitive understanding in the Constitutional requirements while reducing the perceived gray areas in the overall use of force. Law enforcement officers need to be proficient in knowing when not to use force as well as be effective in employing force and fully understand it is acceptable to do so.

Force-on-Force training by definition involves the preparation and conditioning of officers to legally and ethically use force at the appropriate time. In truth, we as members of the law enforcement and military community are entrusted and even required/tasked to do so at certain times.

With that said, an officer must be proficient in articulating these basic principles in the use of force and able to predicate their belief or decision to use force from existing facts and circumstances, including all reasonable inferences, known to them up to that moment in time such force was used. During drills, force on target, force on role player, force on force, scenarios and teach-backs trainers will be asked to verbally articulate why they took a certain action and decided that there was probable cause for force to be used.

The program will consist of hands on use of force training and lecture. Courses will include; instructor methodology, Case Law studies and Case Law utilization in training and defense, testifying as a Subject Matter Expert, developing and documenting lecture and hands-on training, utilizing NLTA/CCMCK in training, developing and teaching judgment based training, avoidance of training scars and hesitation through proper training, overcoming training constraints, development of inservice training programs and much, more.
